Today you should read: Genesis 1

Welcome to JumpStart! I’m so excited that you’ve decided to take the journey with us. Today we start at the very beginning… the beginning of time (as we know it), the beginning of human life, and the beginning of God’s Word to us.

The creation story is captivating! It begins with the assumption of God – no questions – no debate… it simply says, “In the beginning God…” Creation is an act of God’s grace. God carefully and meticulously made everything…and He did it in just the right order – the order that it would take to sustain itself.

First He created the earth itself and the space above it (the heavens) (v.1-2). Next God made light – a necessary ingredient to life. Light is what causes plants to produce oxygen. Light is what allows us to know time – to understand what a day and a night are. Then God named them… (v.3-4).

Next He made the space we live in – where our air exists. He separated the waters which were below from the waters which were above (v.6-8). He made land – and the land was carefully designed with the necessary supplies and nutrients to sustain the plants that would soon inhabit it. Then God made the vegetation – trees, plants, grass, and flowers – all seed bearing to reproduce after their kind (v.9-13).

The next day, God made sun, the moon, the stars, and the planets. Sun for heat and light – the stars for navigation and to help us determine the seasons, the days, and the years (v.14-19).

Now God is ready to make life – He’s prepared everything necessary for it. Land, water, sunlight, and plants to produce the needed oxygen. God begins with marine life. He makes all the fish and sea creatures as unique as they are. He also creates birds – all carefully designed to reproduce – to keep the earth growing and clean (v.20-23). It’s time now for animals – on day six, God makes them. Mammals, reptiles, each animal is intended by God to fit and fulfill a necessary purpose. God knows them all – Jesus told us that not even a sparrow dies without the Father being aware (Matthew 10:29).

Then God makes His crowning creation – man. All of the Trinity is involved (v.26). God makes man in His own image – to look like Himself. He creates us to rule the earth – to reign over all other creation. He gives man the responsibility of naming the animals and reproducing to fill the earth with mankind as we will read tomorrow. God made Adam and Eve as kings and queens in the world He designed. And everything was perfect…at least for now.

For many years and to the tune of billions of our dollars, our world has tried to disprove this story. When they couldn’t, they made up an alternate theory called evolution that says that we came here by accident. When no one believed it, they simply dismissed and outlawed creation – they ridicule it and try to make it go away, while the theory they propose is crazy and makes no sense. Why? Because if there is creation – then there is a Creator – and if there is a Creator He must be in charge.

Today, worship your Creator – nearly every book in the Bible talks of God’s work in this way. Thank Him for His design of the world and you! He loves you… you can trust Him!

  1. I stand in awe when I stop to think about God’s creation. What He has done is simply amazing! Oftentimes, we become accustomed to certain things and take them for granted, when, in reality, we should pause and thank God daily for His creation. One of the greatest miracles – with which I have had firsthand experience – is the birth of a child. I am so thankful that God allowed me to participate in such an honorable calling – that of being a mother. It’s a huge responsibility, but I thank Him for the opportunity, and I thank Him for the beautiful daughter He gave me 26 years ago!

  2. Thanks for this, Tim. As Kelly said it’s a great way to start today. It was dark when I got to school this morning, and I look out the window and can see the sun. How wonderful it is that we can count on what He created to flow seamlessly and take the darkness of the night and turn it into a beautiful day!! Hope you all have a wonderful day CPC!!!!

  3. thinking about the creation makes me think about the hymn “All Creatures Of Our God and King”!!! especially the fourth verse… “Let all things their Creator bless,
    And worship Him in humbleness.
    O praise Him! Alleluia!
Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,
And praise the Spirit, Three in One!
O praise Him!” praise God this morning for all his creation, so intricate, so beautiful, and so miraculous!!! great start to a great day tim!!! thanks

  4. When I reflect on Creator and creation I think about the magnificent grace in which Christ has bestowed upon us to be in right standing before God! Isaiah 45:12 brings this creation story in a proper perspective of how BIG God is…

    Isaiah 45:12
12“It is I who made the earth, and created man upon it.
I stretched out the heavens with My hands
And I ordained all their host.

To think about the fact that God in heaven stretched out the heavens with His hands brings an entirely new perspective to just how BIG God really is – for me this dramatically changes the way in which I come before Him on a daily basis. No longer should we approach the King of the universe with a flippant religious mindset, but rather with awe and reverence bowing our hearts and surrendering our lives to Him who is infinitely worthy of everything we possess!

To God be the glory – May we exalt no other name but Christ!

  5. Thanks, Tim! Can’t help but be reminded of what God created for the purpose of feeding us before the fall. Right after giving us e cultural mandate He says the following:
29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.

Imagine…only green plants for food;) Since I began eating this way (plant based diet), I feel great, have come down to my ideal weight and have SIGNIFICANTLY reduced my risk of cancers and every other disease.

I understand that after the fall the shedding of blood became necessary for cleansing from sin and animal sacrifice (and eating of animals) began. Isn’t it interesting though that God’s perfect diet for His creation was plants?!

Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not implying there’s any sin in eating meat; I’m writing strictly from a healthy living standpoint, and this passage just got me thinking. Food for thought;)

    1. Thank you Tim! My favorite part of this passage (always has been) is verse 27, “So God CREATED man in his own image, in the image of God he CREATED him; male and female he CREATED them.” Throughout this passage God SAYS things into being, earth, light, land, vegetation. Then he begins with the animals, “So God CREATED the great sea creatures..” (v. 21) He creates living breathing things. Then he uses this word three times for male and female. He CREATED us! He molded us, he worked on us. We are a self portrait. Beautiful yes, but beautiful BECAUSE we are in HIS image. How awesome is that!! Have a GREAT morning CPC!!

  6. I love all the responses (and glad I’m getting to write one too) and knowing that our CPC family of faith is all in the Word together, literally ‘on the same page’ what a blessing…

“And God saw everything he had made, and behold, it was very good” (v 31) > thankful for Christ Jesus who restores our Hearts and Lives to that original “very good” status!

  7. I was so excited this morning to get a jump start into the new year. Knowing other members from the same body were reading the same passage made reading His Word even more special. What an amazing Creator we serve….praise Him!!!!

  8. I am always amazed at this passage in the Bible. As with many other passages, there are many layers here. This is a simple story that can be read to children and they can see the majesty of God. As adults, we can see even more in this account of creation. Tim did a great job explaining how each step was in its place for a reason and not out of order. We can see how these steps make perfect sense in the realm of many different sciences today (physical, chemical, biological and more). And then we see something else…God not only creates the world and the universe, but he also orchestrates time for us.
God creates time in a manner that we can understand. He breaks time down into days (day and night) and to weeks.
Now if this whole story was simply made by human thoughts and fantasy, thousands of years ago before many of the mentioned sciences were even understood, how in the world did the author get this right? How did they know that this step has to occur before this step? And why didn’t they just say God made it all with a quick snap of His fingers instead of taking six days to do it and then resting on the seven?
Because God was and is NOT made by man. God is eternal and everlasting. God can teach us something new, every time we look into His Word and one of those is patience and resting in Him.
This is going to be exciting! Thanks CPC .

  9. A big goal I had for myself to begin the new year was to indulge daily into God’s word, not only to enhance my spiritual growth, but to help me be a stronger spiritual leader as a husband and father. What better way to start than by sharing in the Word with fellow CPC members. Reading this passage hits me in a big way that it is because of God that I can even read his word and we all have so many things to stop everday and thank him for. Without God, nothing is possible.

  10. I like when it says over an over again that he spoke it and it was. That’s crazy! Imagine some random person just saying”a pb and j right there!” you would think they were crazy but god did it. Go god!!!
