Today you should read: Jeremiah 19

Jeremiah 19 is a powerful chapter!  It’s a reminder of God’s justice and impeccable purity.  Israel continued to move further and further from God and His laws.  They were lead by wicked kings who didn’t have any regard for the Lord – but instead were all about themselves.  There’s a BIG leadership lesson in that – leaders have influence – for good or for bad.

Now they had hit an all time low… they were not only worshiping pagan idols, they were offering their children as sacrifices to Baal!  When I was in Israel last year, I saw the place near Jerusalem where this took place.  Can you imagine drifting THAT far from God and His direction for your life?

God told Jeremiah to give the bad news to Israel that their destruction would come.  God would be God and would remain just.  He would not tolerate their sin and would deal with it strongly.  He would allow their enemies to take them captive and burn their city.  They would destroy the temple… and that’s exactly what happened.

This story reminds me of a few important principles…

  1. God is as JUST as He is LOVING.  Just because we don’t see God judging like this, doesn’t mean He changed.  He’s always the same.  The only reason we don’t reap this kind of judgment, is because Jesus took it for us on the cross.  He paid for our sin.  Thank you Jesus for the cross!
  2. Sin is deceptive.  How could God’s chosen people move that far from God?  From God’s commandments… the first one is I am the Lord – I will have no other god’s before me.  Or the one that clearly states not to worship any idols.  The answer… sin is deceptive.  It’s tricky.  It lures you in and then grabs you.

Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay.  – unknown

  1. Disobedience is costly.  Whether you live in the day we read about where God dealt with sin with visible judgment – or whether you live today where grace is extended through the cross – disobedience is still costly.

Take Away…

  • What can you learn from Jeremiah 19?
  • Are there any areas in your life in which you are drifting from truth into the lies of the world?
  • What are you going to do about it?
