Today you should read: Revelation 3:1-6
As we work our way through the letters to the seven churches – today we approach number five – Sardis. It was an ancient city located in what is now Turkey. It was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Lydia in the Persian Empire and significant in the Roman and Byzantine times as well. It was important due to its military strength and its location on an important highway lead to the Aegean Sea.
Church at Sardis
The church at Sardis had a reputation of being alive – but dead (v.2) G.R. Beasley-Murray said, “The appearance [of the Sardis church] is that of a beautifully adorned corpse in a funeral parlor, and the Lord is not deceived”. Another words, looked alive on the outside – but dead on the inside. Do you wear such a mask? This church needed to stir up the Spirit of the Lord and come to life!
What Causes a Church (or us) to be Spiritually Dead?
- Absence of genuine life – if we don’t truly know God through Jesus, it is impossible for us to have life (John 14:6)
- Sin – v.2b
- Lack of Obedience (sin) – v.2b –I find that your actions do not meet the requirements of my God.
- Forgetfulness (v.3) – Go back to what you heard and believed at first
How can we come to Life?
- Wake up – v.3
- Repent – v.3
- Hold firmly to what you first believed – v.3
Verse 4 reminds us that SOME in the church in Sardis have stayed faithful to God and are victorious. What about you? Do you need to wake up and Repent? Today would be the perfect day for you to do just that. Spend some time with God and ask Him to reveal Himself to you.
