Today you should read: Revelation 18:1-10
In our passage today, Babylon is back and seen as a mighty city again. The same Babylon that was in the Old Testament and that God used to punish Israel and take them out of the Promised Land. It is possible that an actual physical Babylon will exist in our world again. However, it more likely that Babylon is being used as a metaphor of a bigger sin issue that resides at the heart of mankind. Babylon is described as a city that has a demonic heart where sin flourishes. The Lord commands his people to come out of Babylon and it is a call back to Jeremiah 51:6, 45 and God’s call for lot to flee Sodom in Genesis 19:15. Every time man goes further away from God the landscape of communities always turn out the exact same way as that of Sodom and Gomorra (Judges 21:25, Romans 1:26-32,2 Timothy 3:1-9).
This should be a warning to us because we are not immune to the reality of sin in our lives and our communities. Sin is subtle and the things that seem small turn into big things and impact generation after generation. It is time for us to stand up and fight! We must fight for the righteousness of our Lord and King Jesus. We need to fight for the love of those around us who are dying and we need to fight for the next generation until the return of Christ. One day there will be a final judgment on “Babylon” and our resolve to advance the gospel will be the difference of how many come out of the city when God calls (v.4).
