Today you should read: Revelation 21:1-8

As I read this passage it’s hard not to think about what happened in Paris this past weekend and what we continue to see around the world. Sickness and pain are running rampant. Terrorism and dictatorships rule much of the world and grasp us with fear and uncertainty of the days to come. I hope and pray that, as we deal with these issues as best we can and prepare ourselves for the worst, we remember a few things from today’s passage.

  1. Heaven is coming to earth

We know it is clearly not here now but we can trust that God’s word is true and that this very vision John had will, one day, be a reality for us. There will be a day, possibly soon, that the old heavens and old earth will pass away and God, in His glory, will come down to be with us forever.

2. God is coming to earth

Now, we know He is every where and we know He is here now, living in among His people. When I read verse 3, there seems to be a sense that this dwelling is different. It is much like what we saw and heard when Jesus came down to be with His people. God is moving back into our neighborhood, this time for good.

3. Everlasting peace is coming

Verse 4 is one that we all know and love. The image of peace and joy here moves the heart like little else does. Tears will be gone. Death will be abolished. Mourning and pain will be erased. God will make everything new, as it was intended. Man will be perfected, God will walk among them and we will live in an eternal state of peace and joy as we have never known before.

As you think on the pain of our days here on earth, lost loved ones, harmful words, broken relationships and the like, remember these words and these promises. The day is fast approaching, hold fast to that hope.
