January 4, 2016

Happy New Year and welcome to JumpStart!  I’m so glad you’ve decided to join us in our journey through the Bible.  I hope you’ll make a commitment to see it all the way through – it will change your life.

Here are some suggestions to make the most of your reading:

  1. Do it at a consistent time (mornings are best)
  2. Find a quiet place
  3. Make your commitment known to your family and your Connect Group
  4. Be a part of the JS community – write comments when you can
  5. Try to draw out one thought and think about it through the day

Today you should read: Genesis 1

Genesis is the start of it all.  Chapter 1 describes God’s incredible handiwork in creating everything!  The word “create” means to make something out of nothing – God just spoke it all into being.

FIRST He created light – and separated day from night (v.3-5).  Ever thought what our lives would be like without light – if we lived in darkness?

NEXT He made the sky (v.6-8).  Take a moment today and look up – look at the beauty in the sunrise or the colors and shapes in the sky.

THIRD God made ground and separated the seas (v.9-10).  Remember the last time you were at the beach?  Remember the beauty of the ocean?

THEN the plants – all bearing seeds to reproduce. (v.11-13)  The plants, the trees, and the flowers.

FIFTH God created the sun, moon and stars, allowing for the seasons, days, and years (v.14-19).  Think about how beautiful the stars are – or a moonlit night.  Feel the warmth of the sun on your skin…

SIXTH He made the fish and birds – all the bright colors and species.  (v.20-23)

NEXT God made animals – wild and tame – small and large. (v.24-25)  Ever think about the incredible variety in those?

LAST God made man – His crowning creation in His own image. (v.27-31)

All made in perfect order and with precision.

  • How does being made in God’s image affect you?
  • Spend a moment praising God for His incredible creation of the world.
  • What are all the things that creation put in motion?
  • Who can you tell about JumpStart today?

  1. Love this reminder of how He created it all. This is something I take for granted. I’ll be sure to take it all in and praise Him for the beauty around me.

  2. Found this the other day…”The standard for true love, wisdom, kindness, justice, and so on is the character of God Himself. This means that we cannot define these moral qualities without reference to the Lord and that we cannot base our understanding of these qualities on the way the world understands them. As we seek to image and reflect God, let us continually turn to His Word so that we can understand what it means to be what He calls us to be.”

  3. Anytime I reflect on creation, the one point that seems to stand out is that He did it by speaking. That’s incredible!

  4. Viktoriya – I think God made us to look like Him. I’m not entirely sure what that means, but I believe it really matters. It gives us perfect self esteem when we remember.

  5. Every time I read this passage, I am reminded of God’s great power….his sovereignty. If God created everything by simply speaking, what more can he do in my life and others lives if in full surrender and cooperation. Ditto to all other comments this morning!!

  6. I love that God was so personal with creation. He could have said one word or even pointed a finger and it all could have appeared. BUT GOD took time to create things separately and with purpose. That gives me so much encouragement!

  7. Today I am reminded of the lyrics of my favorite hymn, How Great Thou Art:

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the *worlds thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the *rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed:

Excited to be in God’s word together with my CPC family in 2016!

  8. I’m reminded this morning that God is so GOOD! He created everything, it all belongs to Him, yet he invites us to enjoy it and have dominion over it. He could have just said ‘listen to me’ and ‘obey me’, but he didn’t. I found it interesting that God’s first commands were to enjoy and live off what he created. He’s always been a God of blessings, and not restrictions.

Thanks for starting 2016 off on the right foot for us!!

  9. I am so excited for this journey with my CPC family. I love the newness of the word of God, it never gets’ old. I am in awe how much God took special care in his creation. Thanks CPC

  10. Thinking about being made in God’s image gives me prespective this morning on what I was designed for. Praying this morning for the joy that comes with living that out today.

Great start to a New Year of Jumpstart and excited to walk thru this with the CPC family!

    1. This passage always comes to mind when I take the time to enjoy nature around me. Then I am in awe of God power and of all that he has created. A great to start to the new year!

  11. I’d never noticed before that the sky is described as the expanse separating “water from water.” At the time Genesis was written, they probably did think that blue stuff overhead was water! What a neat gift that God gives us – the ability to explore and discover his creation and therefore learn more about him through it.

  12. Wow! Look at all the comments! I’m so excited for this cycle!

I love trying to picture God forming all the various plants and animals as i read this passage.

A note on how we are made in the image of God: “Knowing we are made in God’s image helps us think positvely about ourselves. Criticising or downgrading ourselves is criticizing what God has made and that abilities He has given us”. It’s a huge basis of self-worth. We are precious to Him!

  13. While I agree that being made in God’s image should give us encouragement and help us to think positively about ourselves these scriptures hit me a little different this morning. Tim’s teaching yesterday, he taught us how we should begin to take on the mind of Christ when we take in God’s Word on a daily basis. Today’s Scriptures show me that it was intended for me, another words expected of me as a follower of Christ to feast on the scriptures and to look like who was created by. Think of this the God of the universe picked you and me to take on and resemble him and all of His awesomeness. No we will never be God, but we can be godly. Have a incredibly awesome day Center Point Church!

  14. Thinking this morning about the phrase, “and he saw that it was good”. God doesn’t make mistakes or inferior creations. All that God has made is wonderful.

    1. Key observation, Robbie! Truly understanding this can change the way we view a lot of the craziness going on in the world around us. The world’s ideas of social justice are often at complete odds with what God declared to be good.

  15. Someone pointed this out the other day and thought I’d share. On day 1 God made light but it wasn’t until a few days later that He made the sun. So for those first few days God made and sustained light without anything to shine light on the earth. Reminds me of Revelation when it says that in heaven we won’t need lights because God’s glory will be our light.

    1. I wondered the same. Plants came before the sun too…
Extending other comments on “in His image”- physical, emotional (though those are too often out of wack, whereas He has kept control), attitudes-just think what we’d be like if we retained His attitude in all things, love-pure love-wow…His image is all encompassing!

    2. I was also struck with verses 3-5… Sadly, I’d never really noticed God’s separation of light and darkness as something other than day/night. Something I will be studying today!

  16. I asked God to reveal something new about this passage to me, and I did see something that I have never thought about before. It is too long to type out and share here, but I want to acknowledge the living nature of the Word. I am committed to doing this Jumpstart every day, and I know it will change the quality of my relationship with Christ for the better. Thanks for producing this content to help us with this goal.

  17. The number of comments and what each of them has to offer is so encouraging to me this morning! I, like many others, have read this passage so many times that sometimes I don’t pay attention to all the details! Today I decided to pay close attention to the specific order that God used. How cool that God did not just speak everything into being at the same time, but that He took the time to slowly and carefully create each one in the order that was needed! God is such a great and personal God, something I needed to be reminded of!

  18. God is indeed good. Love the reminder of His creativity and power today.

Pray for us this morning: last session at Passion 2016 with our college students/leaders. It has been quite powerful.

  19. Anytime I am enjoying a sunset, a day at the beach, a hike in the woods, or the smell of grass I am reminded how awesome and amazing this world is. There can be no doubt that God created it all with love, care and precision. Just look around you and take in all it’s glory! Leaves me in awe of HIM.

  20. It’s crazy to think how often we overlook Genesis, and especially chapter one, because it’s common knowledge among most people. But, when you sit down and read it without distractions, you realize how beautiful his word is, and how everything was spoken into creation and that all of his creation is good. Ultimately, creation is the most important aspect of God’s plan and I hope to start viewing this passage that way and seeing the beauty of God’s creation every day as he lets me live for him.

  21. Reading this passage was a reminder of God’s power and creativity.
A phrase that stood out to me this time was “And it was so.” God said,
“Let there be…,” and then the response to His Word was, “And it was so.” In what ways am I resisting the “And it was so” response from His Word speaking into my life? Or missing the response because I’m not spending time in His Word?
Regarding God’s creativity, He fashioned this incredibly awesome world! And then, gave us the capabilities to enjoy it!

  22. God’s Word reminds me from this passage that words spoken do matter. Being absolute in His perfection, creating in absolute perfection and giving us an account of it in His word. In stead of waving a hand, wiggling His nose, or clapping His hands, He speaks it into being.
Repeating over and over “God said” (10x)
When He was finished He said that it was very good.
I wonder when we are done speaking, how often we can say it was “very good”?

  23. 31 Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good!

^^ This was the verse I got stuck on while reading. Each day’s creation was good but everything together was very good. Thanks for Jumpstart!

  24. I struggled this morning, but caught up with JS this evening. I found myself picturing the beauty of his creation reading the words in Genesis. And I, too, was struck by the sustaining of light before He created the sun.
    Thankful for this!!

  25. While I just began reading through Genesis about a week ago, I saw genesis 1 completely different today than I did then. I love that God’s word continually speaks to us in different ways. Today the idea of God creating everything in the perfect order amazes me. Im excited to go through scripture with my church family!

  26. In v2, when darkness was over the surface of the deep, the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. This hovering is an intensive verb form in the Hebrew. Just before God said, “Let there be light” the Holy Spirit is excited.

I believe that is how the Holy Spirit anticipates coming and changing a lost person. Are you ready?
