Today you should read: Exodus 20

Exodus 20 is one of the most well know chapters in the Bible and one of the most controversial.  How many fights have there been about posting the Ten Commandments in front of a City Hall or in a public building?  Why?  Because we don’t want to be told what to do – we want to do things our way – with our rules.  But how does that work out?  Things ALWAYS work better when you do them God’s way!  But even as Christ-followers, many of us see these as outdated and obsolete. They are current and very important for our lives today.  God’s Word always is.

  1. No other gods.
  2. No idols.
  3. Don’t misuse God’s Name.
  4. Take a day to rest and honor God each week.
  5. Honor your parents.
  6. Do not murder.
  7. Do not commit adultery.
  8. Do not steal.
  9. Do not lie.
  10. Do not covet.

Each of these is a study in itself (I want to teach a series on them soon) but simple enough to understand.  What would our city, or country, and our world be like if we all obeyed them?  See… God does know best!

  • Which of the 10 Commandments are you only partially obeying?
  • How would fully obeying them all improve your life?
  • What steps will you take today to change that?

  1. This msg appears to be a tough one to digest (w/ no comments). It certainly takes a depth of introspection we don’t necessarily like. Commandments 3-10 seem more clear cut, though we must look at the complete meaning of the terms to be able to assess our lives truthfully. Unfortunately, even churches have muddied definitions to keep tithing flock in the pews:(
Because we don’t have bronze or gold statues in our homes we figure we are ok on the #1 ,2 “no other gods, no idols” commandments. Those terms are what force a digging into our lives that cause discomfort in a society that glorifies self-satisfaction and comfort above all else. Constantly needing to run the checks and balances on where our commitments of time, energy, and money really lie just adds to all that sucks time from our days. Is Work our god or idol? Our image? Exercise? Family? Money and more of it? Things and more things? Entertainment? After all more $ is how we get to buy and do More-bringing us comfort. Have we attached things to our understanding of comfort when perhaps comfort really means “rest, peace…”? Have we just changed the clothing on the OT idols from gold to More Stuff, More Activities, & whatever it take to get them? Either way they rob man of what God meant for all-His rest and peace with or without all the stuff that consumes our world. The 10 Commandments most certainly aren’t outdated or obsolete and our redefinition of each doesn’t change that. God understood and understands man through and through-thus His golden kernel of wisdom lies in these Commandments.
Continuing the needed introspection and digging…Thanks for this post to jog thoughts and life back to His basics.
