Today is the very familiar story of Jesus with The Woman at the Well. Jesus is the Master Evangelist and we can learn so much from Him and His interaction with her.
Purposeful Mission (v. 4-6)
He had to go through Samaria on the way (v.4). There were multiple ways Jesus could have chosen to walk on His journey. Jews avoided Samaria at all costs because of racial prejudice. Jesus CHOSE to go that way in order to meet this woman. How can you and I do that? Where does God want you to purposefully go in order to meet people who need Jesus?
Purposeful Conversation (v. 7-9)
As He arrived, he entered her world and engaged her with a simple request – “Please get me a drink.” This shocked her because Jews didn’t talk to Samaritans and men didn’t talk to women. But Jesus did… How can you and I live life on purpose thinking of going where people are and engaging them in a simple beginning conversation?
Purposeful Witness (v. 10-26)
Jesus got right to the point of the meeting. He shared the life-changing Good News in a way that made sense to her. He started with analogy of the well and moved to the intriguing idea of living water. She is immediately interested (v. 15) but Jesus knows she doesn’t understand all that it involves. He knows there are other things that will distract her. He discusses her present situation (married five times and living with a man she isn’t married to now). He talks about religion with her (many times people want to do this). Then He declares to her that He IS the Messiah, what she was looking for.
We must do the same thing. We must go where people who don’t know Jesus are, even if that makes you uncomfortable. We must begin with kind, genuine conversation that is engaging. But then we must move to a clear presentation of the Good News, Jesus came to save you and make your life brand new. We must share the life-changing message of the Gospel and invite them to respond.
- Where can you go and who can your reach out to today?
- How can you start a simple conversation with someone at work or school that could lead to the Gospel?
- Do you know what to say? If not, will you make a commitment to get Prepared so you can?
