Today you should read: John 14:1-14

We find some of Jesus’ boldest statements on earth in today’s Scripture. Statements that the Jews & Romans use against Jesus when putting Him on trial later. Claims of divinity for Christ and intolerance of other religions’ salvation. Before we explore these somewhat risky & controversial statements let’s start with his preceding statements that everyone seems to look past.

Jesus starts off by comforting His disciples back then & His brothers & sisters in Christ today by saying:

1 Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. (14:2-3)

To those who can lose heart easily and become discouraged, Jesus says “DON’T”. Instead “BELIEVE”. Believe in God. Believe in Jesus (in which he claims to be the one and same in a moment). He then explains that God has plenty of room for people in Heaven. He’s preparing a room for us and if He has prepared a place for you, He WILL come back for you. So let’s get this straight. Jesus says don’t be discouraged, He’s preparing Heaven for plenty of people & if you’ve received Him and that promise, He will fulfill it and come back for you no matter what. Now here comes the perceived hard part. Next Jesus says:

“6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” John 14:6-7

These exclusive claims shows that no other religion or way outside of Jesus can bring us to God our Heavenly Father. If you know Jesus, you know God, but only if you know Jesus. Why? Well, in the disciples confusion, Jesus answers that by saying how Him and the Father are one and in a little bit He’ll talk about the Holy Spirit which reveals our doctrine of the Trinity.

“Just like these claims got Jesus in some trouble back then, they’ll get us in trouble today.” “How dare we say another religion is wrong. Don’t all ways lead to God anyways?” “Jesus was a good dude but certainly not God.” “There’s no way one can even truly know God.”

This is just some of the wrong thinking that goes against Jesus’ Word and our beliefs. One thing we know about Jesus is that as tough as His words may be at times, He will not lie to us. It’s not in God’s character or nature. We need to trust in these claims and they should mold our worldview and lives. It’s why we will take persecution as we continue to share with a lost world that they can be found in Christ alone. It’s why we show them that Jesus was truly Lord and God through His messianic prophecies fulfilled miracles, teachings, and claims like the ones we read today. And if that’s the case, it should not only change our lives but those we preach the Gospel to. But don’t forget, like Jesus said in the beginning, Don’t let you hearts be troubled as you share this message and Jesus has plenty of room in Heaven with these exclusive claims. Those who He promises salvation, He will come back and get for salvation.

  1. Thanks for the commentary today Erik! I love all of God’s Word but John 14:1-14 is among my favorite passages of scripture. Jesus clearly tells His disciples who He is. He explains how a loving Father prepares a place for His children and returns for them. He reminds them to not allow their hearts to be troubled by the things of this world.

Then why do we struggle so much with all of these things? Satan is constantly trying to steal our joy with the troubles of this world. Studying God’s Word, spending time with Him in prayer, and corporate worship with your church are all good ways to be reminded that we are only on this Earth for a short time and then our Heavenly Father will return to gather His children for eternity. Glory to God!
