The mark of a true follower of Christ is obedience. According to the prophet Samuel, “obedience is greater than sacrifice” (1 Samuel 15:22). According to Jesus, “whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me.” Obedience to the Word of God (Christ’s commandments) is absolutely necessary for a person to follow Christ because the Word of God is truth. It is the truth of God made manifest in written form. It is from the Word of God that we receive the gospel of Jesus, are compelled to surrender our hearts to Him, and follow Him. Christ is the way, and the truth, and the life, and the only way to get to the Father is through the truth found in the Son.
It is one thing to know that we need to keep God’s Word and live out the truth in it, but it is another thing to actually be able to do it. I love how Jesus doesn’t just leave us wondering how we are going to make it happen, He tells us how He is going to make it happen:
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
This passage is a powerful picture of the triune God and how each person of the Godhead functions. Jesus tells His followers that He will ask the Father to send the Holy Spirit (the Spirit of truth), so that we may follow the Son. Basically, we will not keep Jesus’ commandments and walk in the truth of God’s Word on our own power because we cannot. We need help and the Holy Spirt is the Helper we need. He is the Spirit of truth that comes to live inside every child of God, directing their hearts to truth. The Holy Spirit takes an orphaned heart that doesn’t know where to turn and directs it to Jesus who purifies that heart and makes the orphan His child.
Today, if you are a believer, the Holy Spirit that dwells within you is the seal of ownership God has placed on you (2 Cor 1:22), the deposit guaranteeing your inheritance (Eph 1:14). He is the evidence that you are in Christ. He is also the way that you will fully love Christ and keep His commandments as He calls you to in your life. This truth should not lead our hearts to be troubled or afraid, but it should give us tremendous peace (v.27). Peace to know that we are His children, no longer orphans, and that He has given us His Spirit to live a life that glorifies Him and transcends this life where we get to spend eternity with our Father one day soon.
In what areas are you lacking in obedience to God? Pray and ask God to empower you through His Holy Spirit to follow Him completely in that area today. Then, spend some time today praising God for the gift of the Holy Spirit in your life.
