Today you should read: Joshua 14

Today we see God’s fulfillment of the promise He made to Moses, as the people inherit the land that was promised to them. God was faithful in His promise to the nation of Israel to give them an inheritance, and He is still faithful to us today to do the things He promises. I want us to look closer today, however, at the character of Caleb and the reward he received.

Caleb was one of the original spies, sent by Moses, to investigate and report back concerning the land that God had promised them. Back in Numbers 13 and 14, all of the spies except Caleb give a terrifying report of the giants that inhabit the land and the fortified cities they dwell in. All but Caleb and Joshua believed the mission to be impossible and doubted that God can overcome such odds. Only Caleb spoke out against the others and encouraged the congregation:

“If the Lord delights in us, He will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey.” Num 14:8

Fast-forward to our text today, the Israelites have occupied the land, defeated those enemies that terrified the other spies, and they are dwelling in the land God had given them. God was good on His promise! Caleb is now receiving the land that he first saw as a spy. He is receiving his inheritance, scripture says, because he wholly followed the Lord his God.

Take a moment today, wherever you are and ask yourself: am I wholly following the Lord my God? Are there parts of your life that you haven’t given God control over?

Christ promised us that He would never leave us or forsake us; He promised that we would face trials and tribulations, but we can take heart because He has overcome the world. God was faithful to the promises He made to the people of Israel and He is faithful to us today!

What do you need to lay down today to wholly follow the Lord?
