Today you should read: Matthew 22:1-22

Before we jump into the passage today, would you share a prayer request that we can bear with you today? Leave it in the comments section, and everyone who reads Jumpstart, would you please pause and lift up all requests you find here? Let’s serve each other through intercession today.

Tense moment? That’s an understatement. In our reading today, Jesus and the Pharisees are having quite the dialogue. Jesus was calling out their pretense and their lack of true grace and love. They were still trying to trip him up, calling Him a heretic and and striving to disperse his following. While the parable of the wedding feast may be a little confusing at first glance, make no mistake about it: it was pointed at the religious leaders.

One important highlight here is the inclusion of the gentiles into God’s family. We on the opposite side of the globe are eternally grateful for this. We are invited to the table. That’s what Jesus was getting at when He said in verses 8-10,

And he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, and the guests I invited aren’t worthy of the honor. Now go out to the street corners and invite everyone you see.’So the servants brought in everyone they could find, good and bad alike, and the banquet hall was filled with guests.” Matthew 22:8-10 NLT

This infuriated the Pharisees. They switched gears to a discussion about Caesar in what seemed to be a last ditch effort before moving to crucify Jesus.

What do we do with the passage today? Well, I think it is important for all of us to check our hearts and make sure they are submitted to God’s will… no matter what. The Pharisees were misguided, blinded by pride. Yet they were supposed to be the leaders of God’s people. Let’s humble ourselves before Jesus and make sure that we’re not advancing our own kingdom. Let’s ask Him today to focus our hearts on the Author & Perfecter of our faith. May Jesus Christ and His glory be our treasure!

  1. Todd
    Thanks for your post today.
Please pray that the things that I do and say would honor God on a daily basis.
I also need guidance in upcoming business decisions.

  2. Thanks Todd
Please pray for me to be completely reliant and submitting my life to God through prayer each day and taking action on His Word. Also to continue changing my heart to reflect Jesus o others. But also a praise to Him for His Salvation and direction for me.

    Happy Friday!

  3. Praise God we are all invited to his table! My prayer is for God’s strength in moments of weakness. That I would depend on Him completely, and be satisfied completely. Lifting you up Austin and Bill!

  4. Hey Todd! I like this idea! I just have a request for prayer for upcoming changes in this new year! I prayed for you Austin, Bill and Angela!

  5. Please pray for us as Serah is on the mend from a handful of medical struggles in 2016. New doctors and opportunities ahead, but we are asking the Lord to make this year one of answers and healing.

Also pray for a fruitful year in our college ministry. I sense that the Lord is doing some great things and that there are exciting days ahead.
