The drama is real! Our reading today opens with the king in a drunken mess. In his stupor, he wanted his beautiful wife, Vashti, to parade in like a runway model for all to see. She rebelled and caused a huge ruckus with the king’s court. It led to a harsh decree against her.
What can we take away from a passage like this? Hang on… the story is just getting good. God is setting the stage for a new queen to come. He is setting the stage for a future Messiah to come through Israel — a nation that would be preserved through the queen we’ll meet in tomorrow’s reading.
Back when we went through Jumpstart in 2011, I wrote this to our church because I wanted us to remember the big picture of the book of Esther. I hope it encourages you again today:
The name of God is not mentioned at all in the Book of Esther. Yet, you see His divine fingerprints from start to finish. This story is dark. It’s dramatic. But it’s also hopeful and a reminder of God’s big plan for His people.
