Today you should read: Luke 18:1-17

How much is Jesus worth to you?

Our reading today begs this very question. The “rich young ruler” passage is a go-to whenever we want to confront someone’s sinful lifestyle or extravagant living. Unfortunately, I think we often fail to let this encounter with Jesus truly minister to our own hearts. It’s a story we look at as being about them instead of directed toward me.

The ruler in this story was probably a religious leader (maybe in a synagogue or in the Sanhedrin). He was clearly religious; he could talk the church game. Something was missing, though. What Jesus tells him is that he lacked true repentance in his heart. He went through the motions, much like we see often in our Bible-belt Christianity. There was no true sacrifice.

Well, Jesus lowered the boom. He went right to the heart of the man’s idol: money. And as you read this, ask yourself what your idol is… He’s probably lowering the boom on you as well.  In light of the rich young ruler passage, let’s meditate on this question today:

Is the God of INFINITE WORTH of more value to you than the things of FLEETING WORTH this world offers you?

The remainder of today’s reading reminds us of Jesus’ fulfillment of prophecy and His prediction of His death and resurrection. Aren’t you grateful that the gospel is true and that our Savior did what He said He would do? That’s good stuff.
