Today you should read: 2 Kings 10
“Now come with me, and see how devoted I am to the Lord.” 2 Kings 10:16 (ESV)
The verse above is the verse I really want to focus on today. This and the previous verse show us something very important about this passage: what a true heart for God looks like. The ESV Study Bible says this about these verses: “The wording here underlines that the theme throughout the chapter is ‘who is on the Lord’s side; who is in the right?'” This is an important question we must ask ourselves as well.
When you look at your life, can you say that you are devoted to the Lord? Some possible markers of a life that is devoted to the Lord are:
- A love and desire for God.
- Loving other people before yourself.
- Spending quality time with God in His Word through reading, study, memorizing, meditating, etc.
- Seeking the Lord in dependent prayer.
- Sharing your faith with those who don’t know Christ.
- Repenting from sin.
There are surely many more that could be included on this list, but if you look at the list and feel convicted by a lack of devotion, then today is a great day to begin being fully devoted to the Lord. It also must be said that your standing before God can never be based on what you do; it is based solely on what Christ has done. It’s also important to remember that God cares much more about your heart in what you do than simply doing to accomplish tasks.
The goal then is to have a pure hearts devotion to God that is based on what Christ has already accomplished on your behalf. Do you have that? What needs to change in order to pursue it?
