Today you should read: Isaiah 29
The verse that stands out from our chapter today is a verse that was used by Jesus in the New Testament:
And the Lord said:
“Because this people draw near with their mouth
and honor me with their lips,
while their hearts are far from me,
and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men. (v. 13)
Jesus used this verse in Matthew 15:8-9 to talk about specifically about the Pharisees who were attempting to use the law to not love their parents well.
I think we can draw a lot from this verse today. First, it is easy to pay lip service to God when in reality we are not close to God at all. This can mean acting like a Christian (going to church, being baptized etc.) without having our hearts really changed. It can also mean acting like a Christian while living an unrepentant life of sin.
We must have hearts that are pure and genuine in our devotion to Christ. Where do you find your heart towards God today?
