Today you should read: Isaiah 31

In today’s reading, we see the Lord’s reaction to Israel looking to Egypt for help in war instead of looking to the Lord. In the last chapter, Israel made a treaty and alliance with Egypt for protection against enemies. God made clear that these plans were contrary to the Lord’s plans.

Israel was a nation that was set apart from other nations. It doesn’t feel like quite a big deal to us that they made a treaty with another nation because of our current perspective of war (Allied & Axis Powers in World War II, NATO, etc.). However, this was a big deal because Israel was called to trust God completely. In seeking help from Egypt in this instance, they were rebelling against the God who had promised to protect them.

In the past, David trusted that God would protect Israel from the hands of the Philistines, and God was faithful! We all know that story of God’s faithfulness to David! Plain and simple, in this instance, Israel did not trust the Lord.

So let me ask you: do you trust the Lord for protection and provision, for wisdom and guidance, for salvation and eternal life? Our God is strong and able to take care of his children. The Lord of Hosts, the Lord of Armies is with you.

Take some time to read Psalm 46 and meditate on the verses today:

God is our refuge and strength,
a helper who is always found
in times of trouble.
Therefore we will not be afraid,
though the earth trembles
and the mountains topple
into the depths of the seas,
though its water roars and foams
and the mountains quake with its turmoil. Selah

There is a river—
its streams delight the city of God,
the holy dwelling place of the Most High.
God is within her; she will not be toppled.
God will help her when the morning dawns.
Nations rage, kingdoms topple;
the earth melts when he lifts his voice.
The Lord of Armies is with us;
the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah

Come, see the works of the Lord,
who brings devastation on the earth.
He makes wars cease throughout the earth.
He shatters bows and cuts spears to pieces;
he sets wagons ablaze.
10 “Stop your fighting, and know that I am God,
exalted among the nations, exalted on the earth.”
11 The Lord of Armies is with us;
the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah
