Today you should read: Deuteronomy 11:8-32

The main verses to focus on in Deuteronomy 11:8-32 are verses 26-28 and 13. Moses tells the people of Israel in verse 26 that there will either be a blessing or a curse on them, depending on if they will obey or disobey the Lord. The Israelites are to keep the commandments of God, the first and most important one being in verse 13, “to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.” If they will follow this then there will be blessing on them and on the Land that God promised them.

The problem is that some may see this as a prosperity type passage. If I do good then the Lord will deal good to me. That is not what this is saying. The blessings come from a relationship with God, which is ultimately what we know is true. If we have a relationship with God, the blessings that He gives are not material possessions, good health, and prosperity. Instead, His blessing is that we have the promise of eternity spent with Him. That is a greater blessing than anything this world has to offer.

Last thing, for parents, notice you are responsible for training your kids in the Word (v.19). This may sound ironic for the Youth Ministry Apprentice to be saying, but you are the primary Bible teachers in your family, not me. I want to partner with you in any way that I can and I will always invest in your student, but please take heart in understanding it is your role as a parent to instruct your kids in the ways of God.
