Today you should read: Deuteronomy 17:1-20
Today’s scripture shows the seriousness of idolatry and sin in God’s eyes by God’s standard. In fact, these are passages that many unbelievers point to to try and show how “mean” God is. But again, if anything it should serve as a reminder how serious God takes sin and idolatry.
As the church, we are called to live by similar standards to purge evil from our fellowship (1 Corinthians 5:13) although on a totally different scale since we operate as a spiritual family and not a nation or government like Israel operated with capital punishment & justice. But we can read these tough passages of Scripture and be reminded how dangerous sin truly is and the consequences of idolatry. We can also be thankful that Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for such sins, freeing us from the ultimate consequence of it (death and hell) and enabling us to pursue holiness and have a relationship with a gracious & just God in the midst of the Messiness of sin today.
