Today you should read: Ezekiel 33
Watchmen on the Wall
‘When I bring an army against a country, the people of that land choose one of their own to be a watchman. When the watchman sees the enemy coming, he sounds the alarm to warn the people. Then if those who hear the alarm refuse to take action, it is their own fault if they die. They heard the alarm but ignored it, so the responsibility is theirs. If they had listened to the warning, they could have saved their lives. But if the watchman sees the enemy coming and doesn’t sound the alarm to warn the people, he is responsible for their captivity. They will die in their sins, but I will hold the watchman responsible for their deaths.’ (v.2-6)
The watchman had a couple of jobs…
-
To watch – to keep a lookout for approaching enemy. Not to sleep on the job, but to be keenly alert and scanning the horizon for danger.
-
To warn – to “sound the alarm” when he saw something that could harm the people.
We have a lot in common with watchmen. Our job to is to warn – to let people around us know about what’s coming if they don’t receive the gift of God’s Son. As you know, all of us are sinners, and without receiving the gift of salvation, we are destined for a Christ-less eternity in the torture of hell forever. We are the warning bells! We are the lighthouses alerting ships to the rocks and pending danger that is around them. We must tell our friends and family about Jesus and His gift of eternal life. We must not be shy or afraid – but vocal in our warning.
If we do… and people listen to the warning and repent – their lives will be saved. If they don’t listen…if they chose to ignore the warning – the responsibility is theirs. But if we don’t warn them we’re responsible for their fate.
When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. Ezekiel 3:18
God wants the world to know about the gift of His Son!
This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:3-4
As surely as I live, says the Sovereign lord, I take no pleasure in the death of wicked people. I only want them to turn from their wicked ways so they can live. (v.11)
So… be alert – be vocal – be a Watchman on the Wall today! Pray about those around you and sound the warning – it will save their lives.
