Today you should read: Jeremiah 4:19-31

Our text today is a continuation of the coming judgment of the Lord. Jeremiah is in great physical anguish. Verse 19 could be literally translated “my entrails, my entrails.” (A nice metaphor to start out with I know). Verse 22 shows us the state of the people are being judged and it is not pretty:

“My people are foolish
and do not know me,” says the Lord.
“They are stupid children
    who have no understanding.
They are clever enough at doing wrong,
but they have no idea how to do right!”

This language was intended to shock people into repentance. We go on to see that there will be consequences for the lack of repentance of the people of Israel.

How is the gospel seen in this passage?

Whenever we are faced with our own sin, we have two options: either continue in our brokenness or repent and believe in the gospel. This is true both for the man or woman who has never accepted Christ’s forgiveness and needs to come to Him for the first time and for the faithful Christian who has been walking with God for many years. We must still repent and believe in the gospel, remembering that what Jesus purchased for us on the cross is far greater than any sin we could ever commit.
